NL Day 12 – Twillingate and more

Twillingate is about 1 hr 15 from Comfort Cove, but we decided to go there anyway. We’re glad we did, even though for the next 3 days we are much closer.

First an amazing seafood lunch at Sansome seafood restaurant off the highway. The seafood chowder was really, really good.

Then a visit to the Beothuk interpretation centre. These people were the local indigenous tribe in the area. They had lived here for about 1,000 years until bring made extinct by the arrival of the European settlers. The last Beothuk died in 1872.

Then a hike at French Beach. It was a windy spot, -2 windchill, but wow.

Then a visit to the wooden boat museum. I forgot to take pictures of the guy from Little Harbor who was building a punt. He was a friendly guy who explained a bit about how to make the curved planks of the hull. But even more importantly he explained where to see an iceberg in his home village. Which is what we did next. This church is right next to the museum. St Peter’s, built 1842.

The iceberg was at the end of a very muddy trail and about 150 meters off the shore. Maybe stuck on the bottom? A chunk fell off while we were there. Made a loud noise.
