Sep 09 2024 – Dirty Caps

Today Sandra and I went to a concert at Leopard Frog Farm. Wha’??

Read about it here: Leopard Frog Farm

Anyway, the group this Sunday are from France. A quartet of amazingly talented young guys playing dance music from the 1800’s! Like Bourree, Mazurka, Valtz, Rondeau, Sautiere, … well I’m sure you know all these dances. Speaking of dances, there was much dancing in the barn this weekend, as they held a 2 day workshop to teach the dances! Apparently 150 people attended, many camped out over the weekend. Speaking of dancing, Sandra and I joined in the dance seen in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4sUVuUUcsQ

They are called Dirty Caps if you want to search for more on YouTube.

They also sang in a version of French no longer spoken. I think it’s call Occitan, from the Occitanie region of South West France.

All in all a great performance and fun filled day!

  1. The lively music we enjoyed hearing in the nearly 200-year old barn was actually based on the music and dances from the early 1800s. There are groups in Toronto and Montreal who follow the music traditions of that era, calling them Balfolk. Here’s an example from Montreal: https://www.balfolkmontreal.com/
