NL Day 17 – Kitchen Sink

So many things today, I didn’t know what to call the day, so kitchen sink it is.

After checking out, the first stop was Puffins and Root Cellars. At Ellison, there is a long history of the locals building and using root cellars for cold storage. Apparently there are dozens in this area. They are in the same place a large puffin colony with over 2,500 pairs of puffins who arrive in May, breed and leave in August. They are on an island off the end of a peninsula, with the usual spectacular sea scapes. And hundreds and hundreds of sea gulls.

After the puffins there was a neat coffee shop in Bonaventure where we met 2 delightful young ladies from New Brunswick. Had a great chat and saw them 3 more times (accidentally) over the next 2 days.

After coffee was the Dungeons. These are gloups, or sea caves whose roof has fallen in.

On the way to the next thing, the Bonaventure lighthouse, there were horses and cows grazing happily ignoring the tourists. The pasture is shared and communal for anyone having horses or cows needing grass. We didn’t. After the lighthouse was lunch back in Bonavista.

After lunch we went back down the highway to Trinity where we hiked the Skerwink trail. About 5 km of easy, moderate and hard hiking, with beautiful views.

Then back to the Airbnb for supper and then we went to the theater in Trinity. They have a professional troupe and they put on a great performance of a new play concerning family dramas, resettlement and lost love.

Then back home where we crashed.
