NL Day 23 – U Turn – Gander

Today we started heading west. Home in a week. But first …

On the way out of St John’s we stopped at Sandra’s cousin, whom she hadn’t seen in ages. Terry is from Nova Scotia and wife Phobe is from Labrador. Many ‘do you remember …’ stories about family and friends. Terry is a retired Canadian Coast Guard captain, and I wish we had had more time to hear some of those stories! I think around here a lot of their time is spend breaking ice for shipping and ferries around the coast. He showed us a plaque made by his last crew highlighting some of his accomplishments. Remember the Ann Harvey story in Isles aux Morts? Terry served on the CG vessel named after her.

Arrived in Gander in the late afternoon. Rested, ate and then … saw Come From Away. The second time for both of us, but seeing it Gander is kinda special. Truly an amazing part of NL history.
